Fury of Flowers

Local artist and City Paper designer Christina Bailey uses flowers as a representation of the circle of life in Fury of Flowers, a series of works on paper inspired by Amanda Gorman’s poem for Renee Nicole Good, the Minnesota woman killed by ICE agents earlier this year. The artwork will be on display at City Lights Eastside in September.

Kobanova

Kobanova is a folk rock and alternative music experience created by Jimmy Riemer, Wes Bacastow and Chris Dickson. After years of live performances and several sold-out shows, the trio released a debut self-titled album in December 2023. Founded in 1998, the Mount Pleasant Farmers Market celebrates the hard work of local farmers and makers. Relocating: Babas on Meeting is moving from its current space next to goat.sheep.cow.north to the former Rodney Scott’s Whole Hog BBQ location at 1011 King St. The original Babas opened on Cannon Street in 2018, followed by the Meeting Street location in 2021 and an outpost on Wentworth Street in December 2025. Espresso and bites: Cafe Lucca, a popup inside Doar Bros. at 225 Meeting St., is slated to open on Sept. 1. It will serve breakfast and lunch and will have an espresso bar. The popup will be open Mondays though Wednesdays from 8 a.m to 1 p.m. More: Instagram

Elevated cocktails: Avondale has a new cocktail bar at 15 Magnolia Road. The space — formerly Voodoo Tiki Bar and Grill and briefly Caroline’s Aloha Bar — is now the Volstad Room. The bar features beer, wine and cocktails on tap, and there is a small plate and shareable bites menu. More: Instagram

Texas invasion: The former Rutledge Cab Company space at 1300 Rutledge Ave. will be the future home of Truth BBQ, an import started in 2015 at a spot between Austin and Houston. The Charleston joint will be the company’s third — and first outside of Texas. Truth is known for its central Texas-style barbecue. No opening date has been set. More: truthbbq.com

WHAT’S HAPPENING

After hours: Annie’s Mae Bakeshop has started an “After Hours” from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Fridays. The menu includes low ABV espresso martinis, cocktails, wine, beer, snacks and dessert. Snacks include a seven-layer veggie dip, cheesy toast, pigs in a blanket and shrimp rolls. Desserts are favorites like a tiramisu, pumpkin spice crème brûlée and cakes by the slice. More: Instagram

Wine tour: Certified Sommelier Sarah O’Kelley will host a series of wine classes at soon-to-open Wine and Company, 441 Meeting St. Each class offers tastings of four wines, a small snack and an information packet. Classes will be offered from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. one Saturday each month, with three intro classes: Burgundy on Sept. 12, Loire Valley wines on Oct. 10 Bordeaux on Nov. 14.
