MORNING HEADLINES  |  For the first time in more than 30 years, there were no September hurricanes threatening the East Coast.

And while three tropical storms did form in the Atlantic last month, numbers have been stark this year.

“The lack of any [hurricanes] as October begins sets the stage for an even rarer possibility: an entire Atlantic season without hurricanes,” according to CNN.  September is usually the peak month for hurricane activity, officials say.

What’s going on?  The super El Nino effect.  The wind shear caused by the weather effect has dampened the warm water temperatures that generally fuel the Atlantic’s hurricane season.

“Wind shear refers to changes in wind speed and direction at different levels of the atmosphere, and it can shred apart anything from budding tropical systems to full-blown hurricanes.”

Meanwhile, a new NPR report says studying the El Nino effect could save lives, but the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is scaling back on research.
