New Orleans-based Ruby Slipper Restaurant Group will open all-day brunch eatery Ruby Sunshine at 171 East Bay St., a space previously occupied by Blossom, which permanently closed after 27 years downtown in December

“We’re excited to bring our Big Easy-inspired brunch to the Lowcountry,” Ruby Slipper Restaurant Group CEO Peter Gaudreau said in a press release. “Charleston is a natural next step for our expansion, and we think the city captures that sense of New Orleans hospitality and Southern charm that Ruby Sunshine is all about.”

Husband-and-wife entrepreneurs Jennifer and Erich Weishaupt debuted the original Ruby Slipper Cafe after Hurricane Katrina in 2008 and have added 10 more locations since. Ruby Sunshine is an offshoot of the Gulf Region cafe, serving “New Orleans-inspired twists on traditional Southern brunch favorites” at multiple locations throughout the Southeast, including Charlotte, Nashville and Birmingham. Charleston’s Ruby Sunshine will be the group’s ninth and first in South Carolina.

Look for dishes like eggs benedict, beignets and seasonal stuffed French toast that will pair with mimosas, a bacon Bloody Mary and more brunch-themed cocktails. Ruby Sunshine is targeting a fall 2021 opening.
