In a last ditch effort to sideline district closing plans, board member Chris Collins threw out a host of complaints at last night’s school board meeting. (To be fair, our favorite was actually a jab from Elizabeth Kandrac, who complained that some people don’t have the internet when Superintendent Nancy McGinley said all of her facts are backed up by the state Education Department website.)
One of Collins’ gripes was a suggestion that what the district was doing was unprecedented in the state during this current budget cycle.
“I’m not trying to be insulting, but to my knowledge, I don’t know of any other (South Carolina) schools that are closing,” Collins said. “We have to find a better way to handle our money to prepare our district for hard times.”
We’re not a naturally superstitious lot, but the wheels of fate turned fast, with reports this morning that another South Carolina district is closing schools. You could hear the cries all the way from Chester County this morning: “Why, oh why, didn’t he knock on wood?!”
CHESTER — Students at two rival schools could become classmates in the fall, and many residents are livid at the prospect.
Chester County school officials are considering closing Great Falls middle and high schools and moving those students to Lewisville schools.
No decision has been made, but the proposal has infuriated many Great Falls residents, who fear their children will be stuffed into overcrowded classrooms and the town will lose a key element of its identity.
