Demetrius Washington, a senior at the School of the Arts in North Charleston, took first place in The Art Institute of Charleston’s Passion for Fashion Competition. Washington, who was taught to sew by a group of teachers and volunteers at the School of the Arts, was inspired to show that the South does have a presence in fashion. His winning submission was a cover for a mock magazine called Southern Vogue.

“I was always a bit interested in fashion, but it was really attending my first live fashion show, Charleston Fashion Week, that confirmed my passion,” he says.

His award includes a $3,000 tuition scholarship to study Fashion & Retail Management at The Art Institute of Charleston, a chance to compete in the National Passion for Fashion Competition, a trip to New York to see runway shows and meet the staff of Seventeen magazine, and a $500 shopping spree. If he wins the national competition, he will receive a full scholarship to an Art Institute school.
