We recently snagged a copy of Piccolo Spoletoโs almost-complete schedule. As always, this yearโs line-up is almost overwhelming in its scope, with both returning and new shows from local and national companies. Here are some of the stand-outs.
Theater. Youโll see the return of some of the past yearโs more acclaimed recent productions (Deuce Theatreโs Treeligion, PUREโs The Year of Magical Thinking and Speech & Debate, Village Playhouseโs Shipwrecked). Minneapolis-based Buckets and Tap Shoes have been touring around the world with their mix of tap dancing, percussion, magic, audience participation, and more. And the Footlight Players present Devil Boys from Beyond, a campy send-up of 1950s sci-fi movies. And we havenโt even mentioned CofCโs Stelle di Domani Series. Alum David Lee Nelson returns with Status Update and Crescent Stage (featuring several alums) presents Reasons to be Pretty, a romantic dramedy about the burden by Neil LaBute.
Comedy. Piccolo Fringe brings us some returning national companies โ like the Upright Citizenโs Brigade, Cook County Social Club, the Reckoning, and Frankenmatt, and the Cody Rivers Show. Plus some new faces like CatNip! (an L.A.-based all-lady troupe), and Chicagoโs Big White Angels.
Dance. The Dance at Noon Series will take place at the Footlight Theatre, with performances from troupes from across the Southeast, including E.E. Motion Dance Company, Great Gig Dance Company, Unbound Dance Company, and Sideways Contemporary Dance Company.
Literary. The free Sundown Poetry Series is sure to be lovely this year, taking place in the Dock Street Theatre courtyard. Some of the participating poets include Lydia Cortes, Helen Brandenburg, and Chuck Sullivan.
Of course, thereโs more. Visual arts, family events, and lots and lots of music. Check the Piccolo website regularly as they add more stuff, and check back to SpoletoBuzz soon for Ballardโs round-up of the most promising musical acts.
