Much of the busy King Street shopping district will be vehicle-free on a regular basis starting next month. The Second Sunday on King Street event will close the strip from Calhoun to Queen from 1-6 p.m. on, well, the second Sunday of the month beginning Oct. 10. It’s sponsored by the city and the Charleston Peninsula Preservation Trust. A similar event this spring, called Do the Charleston, included musical performances and rare in-street seating for downtown restaurants.

Supporters hope that closing the strip will get people out of their cars to walk and bike and, um, spend some money. It’s been a priority for the city’s Bike Committee and the Peninsula Task Force.
