Local singer/guitarist and classic pop fanatic Frank Royster (of the Hed Shop Boys) also acts as ringleader for home-grown Beatles tribute band Sgt. Submarine with HSB bandmates Tommy Hamer (drums), Jay Volpe (bass), and Jeff Bateman (guitar). The quartet handles everything from the Beatles’ early hits to the more expansive studio cuts.

They recently launched two weekly local gigs. They perform at Rita’s Seaside Grill on Folly Beach (2 Center St.) on Thursdays at 7 p.m. Royster and the lads do the “Beatles Happy Hour” from 4-7 p.m. plus a free late-night set at 10 p.m. every Tuesday at Art’s Bar & Grill (413 Coleman Blvd.). The band also headlines at Art’s on Sat. April 30 at 10:30 p.m.

Sgt. Submarine plans to perform several sets at Abbey Road on the River — “the world’s largest Beatles-inspired music festival” — in Louisville, Ky., on May 26-30. See abbeyroadontheriver.com and myspace.com/franklinroyster for more.
