It’s officially tax-free weekend, which means the stores will be swarmed with bargain-hunters. If you’re smart, you’ll join the fray. The sales tax holiday began at 12:01 a.m. Friday morning and extends through midnight on Sun. Aug. 7. The discount applies to clothing, school supplies, computers, and linens, like towels, sheets, and pillows. It does not apply to things like furniture, jewelry, cosmetics, eyewear, or “rental of clothing or footwear,” according to the S.C. Department of Revenue. In addition to the tax-free savings, lots of local places are holding sales to sweeten the deal.

Sugar Snap Pea (161 King St.) has a bunch of sales as well as makeovers from Cos Bar and face-painting for kids on Fri. Aug. 5, 1-5 p.m.

Sally Bettes (493 King St.) is offering 20-60 percent off select items throughout the weekend.
At Bashful Boutique in Avondale (829 Savannah Hwy.), save an additional 20 percent off your purchase, plus 10 percent off previously marked down items both Friday and Saturday — just be sure to ask for the discount.

House of Sage (51 George St.) is offering buy-one-get-one on all women’s spring and summer denim on Saturday and Sunday.

Teal (1225 Belk Drive) has added new items to their sale racks and 50 percent off shoes for the entire weekend.

Berlin’s for Women (116 King St.) has already reduced some merchandise up to 80 percent — now’s the time to get some high-end wares for a low, low price.

At Salt and Seaweed (155 Market St.), get 50 percent off all summer styles this weekend.
