Like good horoscopes, some of the posts on Craigslist’s Missed Connections board are vague enough to be applicable to nearly anyone: “I think there’s a spark when we see each other at work, but I don’t know if I’m misreading the vibe,” for instance, or “Saw you in the cereal aisle, but I was afraid you’d tell me to get a Life if I asked you to be my Honey Bunches.” But then there are a few entries that are so full of specific references and inside jokes, they would only make sense to their intended recipient.

The following are real, quirkily obtuse entries from the Missed Connections section of Charleston Craigslist, broken into lines and stanzas and minimally edited for clarity:

Gerald’s – m4w (River’s Ave)

We had a good conversation

about the long journey

from Oklahoma to Charleston,

Cork, and what a great town Charleston is.

I wish I had gotten your name at least.

We could meet up at Madra Rua to talk more.

Who came to pick you up from Gerald’s?

Maybe a year ago … AC’s Bar – w4m – 22 (Downtown)

I met you maybe a year ago at AC’s one night.

I think it was a Thursday.

You were with your friends sitting at a table.

You seemed really drunk

so I’m sure you don’t even remember this.

Me and you were talking

about how we both want to be writers.

We had the same major/minor combo:

Communications and English.

I had to leave, then I came back

and you asked me if I was avoiding you.

I wasn’t … I just had a boyfriend at the time.

I’ve been single for a while now

and I remembered that night

and regretted not getting your number.

Tell me who your favorite author is

so I know it is you.
