Summer and barbecue go together like apple pie and America, which might be why the Southern Foodways Alliance is spending this summer up to their necks in ’cue. They’ll be road tripping across the South in search of meaty delights, and our own Robert Moss will be blogging about the subject for the SFA site.
The SFA’s “Summer of Barbecue” is a lead up to the their big symposium in Oxford, Miss., in October, which will explore “pitmasters, places, smoke, and sauce.”
Over at the SFA site, they’ll be blogging all the barbecue news that’s fit to print, using a stable of guest bloggers, including Moss, who wrote and published the first full-length history of barbecue in the United States (Barbecue: The History of an American Institution).
If that’s not enough barbecue to fill you up, The Barbecue Bus, an oral history machine, is rolling through South Carolina as I write this. Rien Fertel and Denny Culbert are trekking across the state in search of our barbecue trail, chronicling every morsel of meat they find.
On their blog they write: “Our BBQ Trail itinerary will carry us through the Upstate, the Lowlands, and Midlands of South Carolina. We’ll cover barbecue houses in all of South Carolina’s sauce-varietal regions, from the mustard belt that extends from the state’s center toward Charleston, to the peppery vinegar country of the north-east coast, to the western tomato-based hinterlands. Additionally, we’ll explore the state’s diverse barbecue accoutrements, including hash, chicken stew, vegetable side-dishes, and desserts.”
The two did a similar journey across N.C. last year, and seem to be making their way to Charleston this week before heading up to Raleigh for the SFA’s (sold-out) field trip, which will explore the ’cue of Eastern North Carolina.
