Those looking to revel in the making of musical legends should look no further than Seth Gilliard. The recent Furman University graduate, a.k.a Seth G, is hosting a CD Release Party and Birthday Show on Thurs. Aug. 30 at 8 p.m. at O-Ku.

Trained in classical performance and influenced by Israeli hip-hop violinist Miri Ben-Ari, Seth G is transporting a genre lost in the mix of overly produced sounds and renewing its soul via violin. As Gilliard says, “There’s definitely a movement out there, and I’m just trying to find my place within it”.

If his local following (he performs weekly at the Upper King restaurant) or effortless blending of violin with popular hip-hop instrumentals are any indication, then he has indeed found his place. After listening to some of the originals he covers, such as Alicia Key’s “If I Ain’t Got You” or Elie Goulding’s “Lights”, the songs seem to be lacking without his accompaniment. Fortunately, Seth G has recorded a culmination of his work in 14 cover tracks, including two that have yet to be released.
