The Post and Courier reported today that the Hippodrome is closing.

Local attorney and TV personality “Extreme” Akim Anastopoulo bought the venue from former owners John Brieger and Michael Furlinger (The Terrace) in 2010. He had plans to turn the space into a performing arts and special events venue, but things have been pretty quiet down there for some time.

According to the P&C report, Anastopoulo reported that business was good but he wanted to focus on his law practice. He hopes to find a buyer for the venue, and he wouldn’t specify a closing date.

With its waterfront setting, massive screen, and comfy BMW seats, we think the Hippodrome has been underutilized for far too long. Here’s hoping someone ambitious will snatch it up and give downtown the theater it truly needs.
