Last year it was coriander seed, basil, lavender, and rosemary. The year before it was several varieties of honey. Home brewers from across South Carolina are waiting patiently to find out what Holy City Brewing has in store for them this year at the ingredient reveal at Mellow Mushroom in Avondale (19 Magnolia Road) for the third Iron Brew competition. Along with finding out the secret brewing ingredient, reveal party guests will enjoy a Holy City Brewery tap take over with all Holy City drafts going for $3 during the event.

Brewing teams of up to four people can register for the competition free of charge until July 30 and have until Oct. 4 to submit their brews to Holy City. Whether you’re a brewing pro, a rookie that’s just getting started, or a brewing virgin, you don’t need prior credentials to participate. The Iron Brew main event will be held on Oct. 18 at Holy City Brewing where a panel of judges will sample each beer and announce the winning brew. The winner will get his/her beer brewed by Holy City’s 15-barrel brewing system and will go out for distribution … statewide. Yes, this year’s winner will get their beer sold across the state of South Carolina. We’ll cheers to that.

We asked head brewer at Holy City, Chris Brown, if this year’s ingredient was going to throw competitors for a loop and he said, “Without giving anything away, the secret ingredient is definitely doable and should make for a clean drinkable beer.” So brewmeisters, that should put some of your anxiety at ease.
