Beresford Studios and the Charleston Arts Festival present Down Into Folds, a solo exhibition of new paintings and drawings from local artist Paul Cristina. Down Into Folds opens next Fri. Oct. 26, with a reception from 6-8 p.m. The works will be on display through Nov. 25.

In an artist’s statement, Cristina says, “Gathering together oil paintings, charcoal drawings and dense mixed-media works on canvas, this exhibition focuses on the continued use of layered and manipulated paper materials as a means of investigating the various truths and dimensions of the human condition.”

When we first talked to Cristina two years ago, he was working out of a cavernous, dimly lit upper King Street studio, a newly full-time artist creating large works on canvas. At the time he said, “I want to create art that creates a high enough level of inquiry or intrigue that leads us to having a conversation.”

Since then, Cristina has shown his work frequently around town, spoken at Pecha Kucha, and hosted a solo show in Lake City (home of ArtFields) this summer.
