A memorial for late Charleston Black Lives Matter activist Muhiyidin d’Baha is set for Saturday afternoon, just slightly over one year after the 32-year-old was killed in New Orleans.
The memorial will be held from noon to 3 p.m. at the Denmark Vesey statue in Hampton Park, where a drum circle was held in d’Baha’s honor four days after his death.
Attendees are encouraged to bring candles, djembes or any other instruments, flags, or banners. The event will be kid-friendly.
“This will be good for all of us who knew and loved him to gather and share stories,” according to a Facebook page for the memorial. “Positive vibes only.”
D’Baha, whose legal name was Muhiyidin Moye, was found near his bicycle by New Orleans police officers after he was shot in the thigh in the early hours of Feb. 6 2018. He died at a local hospital later that morning.
In July, police arrested a suspect in connection to his death. Officers have raised the possibility that the shooting was a case of mistaken identity.

Local artist Christopher Johnson, who works under the name Kolpeace, will host an exhibit at the Saul Anderson Gallery in the main branch of the Charleston County Library tonight from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. The exhibit, titled Resilient, is dedicated to black activists and will be dedicated to d’Baha, according to the memorial page.
A conversation with members of the Charleston Activist Network will precede a reception.
