IllVibeTheTribe’s AsiahMae spoke with local DJ SCrib, who’ll perform his own set as well as a separate set as the right-hand man of emcee Jah Jr. — the duo is JahSCrib — at this weekend’s Cultura Festival. In case you’ve been sleeping for a few weeks, good morning: Cultura is Charleston’s first all-hip-hop, dance, and R&B fest, and it debuts at the Royal American this weekend, on Sat. April 20 at 5 p.m.

CP: Why do you feel Cultura is important?
SCrib: I feel Cultura is important because the artists who are on the bill are a family. This event is truly for those who have supported each one of us as well as showing others that when people who have supported each other — whether it is through a feature on a song, sharing the stage on another bill, being in a partnership or simply just having a friendship — we all are here with the same dream to succeed as a people.

CP: Why is it important for you to be a part of this inaugural festival?
SCrib: Being a native of South Carolina, I think this festival is the ONE that will show the city what great black minds are capable of putting together! It shows that there is a place where we all are able to celebrate our community, IN our community.

CP: What do you hope to gain from being a part of this?
SCrib: I hope to gain of course more fans and also networking opportunities throughout the city of Charleston. I would love to have a residency established inside of a venue that allows me to be SCrib and not have filters on the music I play or what I say on the mic for crowd control and interaction.

CP: What are you currently working on that you’re looking forward to?
SCrib: Currently I am working on a DJ event that we all have truly been waiting for in Charleston! DETAILS COMING SOON! Also JahSCrib (Jah Jr and myself titled group) are in the studio and shutting down stages left and right so more shows and tunes are on the way!

CP: What do you want fans to take away from your set?
SCrib: My set will be NOSTALGIC. Be ready to dance, sing, twerk, and feel the vibes throughout my set. Trust me, it will be a set you don’t want to miss!
