Charleston County students under 18 can receive hot and cold lunches as well as snacks through Aug. 4 thanks to a Summer Feeding Program offered by three local institutions.

“We are delighted to once again be able to provide access to free, healthy foods for kids and teens this summer,” said Kathleen Montgomery, associate director of community engagement at Charleston County Public Library (CCPL). “CCPL has been working to help fight food insecurity for children and teens and wouldn’t be able to do this work without partners like the Charleston County School District and the Lowcountry Food Bank, leaders in providing community support.”

The three-way partnership helps facilitate this program and provide nutritious meals at seven library locations. 

Many families rely on schools providing a meal or two to their children every day during the school year. Whether families are below or above the poverty line, food insecurity can affect anyone. According to a news release, the Summer Feeding Program helps combat the lack of access to school meals in the summer by providing a consistent food supply. 

The library system will serve hot lunches at the following locations:

  • Otranto Road: 2261 Otranto Road, Charleston, 10:45 a.m. to 11 a.m.
  • John’s Island: 3531 Maybank Highway, John’s Island 11 a.m. to 11:15 a.m.
  • Baxter-Patrick James Island: 1858 S. Grimball Road, Charleston, 11 a.m. to -11:15 a.m.
  • Cynthia Graham Hurd/St. Andrews: 1735 N. Woodmere Dr., Charleston, 11 a.m. to -11:15 a.m.
  • Dorchester Road: 6325 Dorchester Road, North Charleston, 11:30 a.m. to  11:45 a.m.
  • Main Library: 68 Calhoun St., Charleston 11:45 a.m. to noon
  • Keith Summey North Charleston: 3503 Rivers Ave., North Charleston, 12:10 a.m. to 12:25 p.m.

Cold lunches or snacks will be provided at three additional locations:

  • McClellanville: 222 Baker St., McClellanville, Noon to 1 p.m.
  • Edisto Island: 1589 S.C. Highway 174, Edisto Island, 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. p.m.
  • St. Paul’s Hollywood: 5130 S.C.Highway 165, Hollywood, Noon to 1 p.m.

The program will not be in service on Juneteenth (June 19) and Independence Day (July 4).
