UPDATED July 9, 2:28 p.m. | MORNING NEWSBREAK | Charleston’s Emma Navarro is quickly establishing herself as a force to be reckoned with after she pulled off a major upset Sunday in the fourth round of this year’s Wimbledon, knocking off No. 2-ranked player in the world Coco Gauff in straight sets at center court.
Navarro lost 2-6, 1-6 against Italian player Jasmine Paolini in the Wimbeldon women’s quarterfinals semifinals earlier today.
After her Sunday win, Navarro said in a post-match interview with ESPN that she didn’t “have a ton of words but just really grateful to be out here on Center Court at a tournament with so much history and tradition, that so many legends have played on before me.”
Navarro is ranked No. 17 on the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) Tour and seeded No. 19 at Wimbledon. She started her professional career in 2022 after graduating with a 51-3 singles record at the University of Virginia.
Her performance at Wimbledon follows an already impressive season for the 23-year-old. According to the WTA, Navarro, daughter of philanthropists Kelly and Ben Navarro of Charleston, has won 33 tour-level matches in 2024, more than twice as many as she won last year, while $1,074,546 of her $1,847,241 in career prize money has been won in 2024 alone.
Navarro’s father, Ben, is the founder and chief executive officer of Sherman Financial Group, which currently owns The Charleston Place in downtown Charleston.
