MORNING NEWSBREAK | Former S.C. Gov. Nikki Haley, who sought the 2024 Republican presidential nomination and was the last candidate to leave bruising primary battles, formally endorsed former President Donald Trump Tuesday during the GOP convention in Milwaukee. She urged supporters to back him to unify the party as it heads toward a November election against Democratic President Joe Biden.
“I’ll start by making one thing perfectly clear,” Haley said. “Donald Trump has my strong endorsement — period.”
The speech comes days after it was reported Haley wasn’t going to attend the convention, but released her 97 nominating delegates to Trump. All of Haley’s delegates lined up behind Trump, underscoring her call for unity within the party during her appearance.
Despite Tuesday’s endorsement, however, Haley was once Trump’s fiercest opponent during the months leading up to the Republican primaries.
“With Donald Trump, you have one bout of chaos after another,” Haley said earlier this year after her primary loss in New Hampshire. “This court case, that controversy, this tweet, that senior moment. You can’t fix Joe Biden’s chaos with Republican chaos.”
Haley’s support for Trump drew criticism from Democrats, moderate Republicans and former political opponents.
“It was a complete, incredible flip-flop from what she’s done, flip-flop, flip-flop,” said Trump critic and former Republican Gov. Chris Christie of New Jersey after Haley’s speech. “I don’t think anyone’s going to care.”
