UPDATED 5 p.m. Aug. 5 | Several public spaces are closing early and public meetings are being rescheduled as local leaders continue to prepare for the arrival of Tropical Storm Debby.
According to the latest Monday projections by the National Hurricane Center, Debby is expected to weaken after this morning’s landfall, but will spend a long two-to-three days spinning around the South Carolina coast and dumping what forecasters said could be up to 30 inches of rain in some areas.
The following list will be updated periodically as more schedule changes and closures are announced:
Charleston County
Charleston County Public Library (CCPL) branches and office are closed Monday for the duration of the storm. Book drops and automated material returns will also be closed during this time.
Jury duty for the week of Aug. 5 in the Charleston County Court of Common Pleas and General Sessions has been canceled. All jurors are excused for the week and do not need to report.
The Charleston County School District will move to remote work Aug. 6 through Aug. 7. School and district buildings will be closed, and all extracurricular activities and school events are canceled.
City of Charleston
Summer camps are canceled on Tuesday and Wednesday. The Municipal Golf Course Camp is canceled for the entire week.
All city of Charleston public meetings are canceled for the remainder of the week. No trash or garbage collection will occur on Tuesday and Wednesday
The Charleston Museum and its Historic Houses will be closed Aug. 6 and Aug. 7. The Heyward-Washington House is closed Monday, and the Joseph Manigault House will close at 2 p.m. Monday. All scheduled museum classes and events this week have been canceled.
The Charleston City Market will be closed Aug. 6 through Aug. 7.
The Charleston School of Law is closed through Aug. 8.
Charleston Southern University moved to all in-person classes to virtual learning beginning at 2 p.m. today through Aug. 8.
The S.C. Aquarium will close Aug. 6 and Aug. 7. Select trained staff will remain onsite to handle all animal care needs through the storm.
Charleston RiverDogs games scheduled for Aug. 6 and Aug. 7 against the Augusta GreenJackets are postponed. Make-up dates have not been announced.
James Island
The Town of James Island closed for regular business at 12 p.m. today and will remain closed throughout the State of Emergency as officials and staff shift into their emergency roles. In addition, all Town-sponsored public meetings have been cancelled for the week.
North Charleston
The Ralph H. Johnson VA Health Care System is operating on a modified schedule this week. The Trident VA Clinic, Goose Creek VA Clinic and North Charleston VA Clinic will close at 2 p.m. Monday and remain closed through Aug. 8.
The North Charleston Police “National Night Out” event has been postponed until Oct. 1.
Mount Pleasant
Mount Pleasant Town Hall will be closed Aug. 6 and Aug. 7. Staff will conduct business remotely. Town staff will be available via phone and email and all online services will remain available.
No garbage and trash collection will occur Aug. 6 and Aug. 7. Committee meetings, all public meetings for the week are canceled. The Municipal Court will not be in session this week. All court appearances will be rescheduled and notifications will be mailed.
Outdoor recreation camps and activities are canceled Monday. All recreation activities and facilities, including camps and the Farmers Market, will be canceled Aug. 6 and Aug. 7.
