MORNING HEADLINES  |  It’s a pretty dull news morning with few weekend stories of major impact in the Charleston area.  

If you’re looking for a good place to eat this week, however, you might check out Charleston Restaurant Week, which is ongoing through Jan. 19 with great deals.  

As the City Paper’s Connelly Hardaway writes in a new story, “Restaurant Week is, in our opinion, an opportunity to try out new-to-you restaurants, return to old favorites you haven’t frequented in a while or snag some pretty sweet deals.”  Check out her story for some of those deals.

Two stories making national news may catch the attention of locals:

First, Columbia native Craig Melvin, a former anchor at WIS TV in his hometown, today starts co-hosting responsibilities on NBC’s “Today” show.  

Second, Scott Bessent, the South Carolina native who just sold an East Bay Street mansion for millions and who is President-elect Donald Trump’s pick to lead the U.S. Department of Treasury, is divesting hundreds of millions of dollars of assets to avoid conflicts.  This includes property in the Bahamas, investments in Bitcoin and bets against China’s currency.

Family seeking help in Dec. 3 shooting in North Charleston. Family and friends say they’re looking for information on a man gunned down in his apartment last month in North Charleston. No arrests have been made.

Georgetown Co. is getting two new state parks. Black River State Park will stretch from Kingstree in Williamsburg County to Andrews to Georgetown. Ramsay Grove State park will be about 15 minutes from Georgetown.

North Charleston to review short-term rental policy. Officials say short-term rentals are taking away housing stock and a new policy seeks to fix that.

Grant to fuel more domestic violence help in Lowcountry. A $200,000 grant will provide more domestic violence resources in the Lowcountry, according to this story.

COSCO container line branded Chinese military asset. One of the S.C. State Ports Authority’s top customers, COSCO shipping, has been branded a Chinese military asset operating in the United States, according to the Department of Defense.
