MORNING HEADLINES | It’s a four-way battle today for the top news story in South Carolina:
- Biden visits Sunday. President Joe Biden made a special Sunday trip to the Lowcountry to spend his last day of office here to thank people in Charleston at the International African American Museum and in North Charleston at a church for key political support in 2020.
- Trump to be inaugurated at noon. President-elect Donald Trump will be sworn in today inside the U.S. Capitol away from bitter cold. At a Sunday campaign-style rally, he projected bravado and spread falsehoods, according to reports. Trump reportedly is planning 100 quick executive actions to avoid mistakes in his first term.
- Blast of cold weather to hit S.C. Expect bitter cold this week as the Lowcountry may get up to two inches of snow, according to forecasts. Warming shelters are open. State officials are urging residents to get prepared.
- Honoring Dr. King. It’s also the Martin Luther King Jr. national holiday today, meaning there will be a parade in Charleston and lots of places will be closed.

Staley becomes nation’s highest-paid women’s college basketball coach. The University of South Carolina’s board of trustees approved a contract extension that keeps women’s basketball coach Dawn Staley at the college through 2029-30 at $4 million a year. The total contract is worth more than $25 million.
S.C. Supreme Court reverses sex abuse decision involving Catholic diocese in Charleston. The high court has reversed a judgment in a case by a Charleston man who sued the diocese in a case stemming from the 1970s.
