MORNING HEADLINES | President Donald Trump on Monday hit Canada and Mexico with new 25% tariffs on goods and doubled duties on Chinese imports to 20% as a trade war opened with top trading partners. Canada and China immediately retaliated with new tariffs on U.S.-made goods; Mexico is expected to follow suit today.
“Today’s reckless decision by the U.S. administration is forcing Canada and the U.S. toward recessions, job losses and economic disaster,” Canadian Chamber of Commerce CEO Candace Laing said in a statement reported by Reuters.
The tariffs are likely to result in higher prices for a wide variety of products, including cars, cellphones, computers, tequila, avocados and gasoline. The only goods that won’t face a 25% tariff from Canada are energy-related items such as crude oil, one of the top goods the U.S. imports from there. Instead, they’ll be subject to a 10% tax.
Meanwhile, Trump keeps hinting at more tariffs to come, according to CNN. Steel and aluminum tariffs are set to go into effect March 12. And reciprocal tariffs, dollar-for-dollar tariffs that match what other countries impose on U.S. goods, are expected to go into effect on April 2. Trump has also hinted at tariffs on agricultural imports to promote domestic sales.
