Kulture Klash brings together local fine art, performance and music under one roof | Steve Aycock Photography

There’s good reason to forecast a fruitful year ahead in Charleston’s cultural scene. True, artists are reeling nationally from slashed funding, and there is no clear indication in local seats of power that the arts are a priority.

Still, artists and arts practitioners are leveraging their scrap, hustle and creativity to slip into available spaces and partner with arts-friendly community members for the sake of inspired expression. The arts are, after all, a potent economic driver in the Charleston area.

To be part of the solution, here are some resolutions that will keep our cherished cultural community front and center for the months, and years, to come.

Play the long game

Get on board early with annual subscriptions and memberships. It does a world of good for theater, music and dance companies out of the gate and will help organize your cultural calendar, too.

Start spreading the news

Whether over cocktails or social media, word-of-mouth continues to be a powerful way to fill concert halls and enliven gallery walls. Give the latest staged production or exhibition the same love you might for that perfectly plated restaurant post, and you’ll contribute to a healthy arts ecosystem in the quickest of clicks. Pro tip: Sharing a certain newspaper’s reviews from certain arts critics is an ideal way to foster exchange. Just saying.

Catch up, and catch a show

Plan your socializing around a show or exhibit. Find a place for a bite before to catch up — or after to parse the art — and you’ll add a new dimension to your friendships. Consider coordinating group outings, too. Nab a block of tickets, and they will come.

Collect your impressions

Becoming an art collector is not as formidable as it may seem. With the plethora of commercial galleries and artisan fairs, many new works are accessible and affordable. More local artists are creating scaled-down works with this in mind. Keep your eye out for fundraising auctions, like the annual bonanzas at Redux Contemporary Art Center or Kulture Klash, which regularly feature a range of works.

Launch your own salon

Charleston has a centuries-old tradition of gathering at home to swap thoughts on cultural forays. Whether it takes the form of a book club, or even hosting a guest performance, these homes were meant for expressive displays. Remember: Any lively cultural exchange will match the sofa perfectly.

Figure it into your financial planning

If you’re looking to make tax-deductible donations, run the numbers on charitable contributions for cultural organizations. That will also tee you up for a deeper dive into the ones in which you invest by way of patron events and other programs. If you’re on the ball about estate giving, consider the arts. It’s a win-win.

Sharpen the conversation

With recent federal cuts to leading public media outlets like National Public Radio, supporting these outlets can be make-or-break for some of the area’s most beloved local programming. To make sure our artists’ voices are amplified, fortify the platforms that support them.

Above all, enjoy yourself

With all of its top-tier performance halls, gorgeously appointed galleries and artists who flock here because of the city’s transcendent allure, Charleston has always drawn extraordinary musicians, visual artists and others to its intoxicating shores. Go ahead, pinch yourself. Sure, we can always build and innovate, too. But don’t lose sight of the riches around you, which are there in abundance for your profound enjoyment.
