Itโs the last weekend in August, and, in my book at least, the last weekend of the summer. Sure, itโll stay hot for awhile yet, but letโs pretend that fall is almost here and really blow it out.
Friday night, head to King Street for โ count โem โ three fun art openings. Start at Aster Hall with Reality Revisited, photographs from Katie Leonard and Timothy Pakron. Just up the street, 52.5 Records is hosting a gig poster show, and we hear theyโve got some pretty affordable prints for sale. Redux is hosting the opening reception for Lynn Richardsonโs new installation, Inside the Fence. On Saturday, check out She Shall be Called Woman at Circular Congregational Church, exploring the role of women in religion.
The French Film Festival continues through Sunday, and films are just $5, or free for the CofC community. You can also catch a screening of Road Warrior at The Mill in Park Circle Saturday for $5, or if you like your movies free, go to Cinebarre โ theyโre showing Old School on their outdoor screen.
Hereโs an event weโre super excited about: the Txak Blok Party. This Saturday event is built around Txakoli, a Basque wine, and includes stops at Fuel, Coast, and Chaiโs. There will be yummy food, like a Geechee-style fish pickinโ, transportation on an old prison bus, and fun with the porron, which is essentially a Spanish beer funnel. Bring cash. In other wino news, head to Irvin~House Vineyards on Saturday for the Grape-Stomping Festival. Sip muscadine wine, bring a picnic, and stroll through the vines. Itโs only $5 per car.
Music fans, the Beach Music & Shag Festival is going on this weekend at various venues, the Green & Bold is playing Eye Level on Saturday, and there’s a mini electronic dance music festival, called Meltdown Massacre, at the Music Farm Saturday. On Sunday, head to the Windjammer for the I Got Music release party, with live sets from Ryan Bailey, Mac Leaphart, Part-Time Heroes, Skye Paige & the Original Recipe, The Plainfield Project. Additional bands on the comp include the Graham Whorley Band, Part-Time Heroes, Firework Show, Milhouse, Gaslight Street, Jamie Resch & The Kentucky Shoes.
Most theater companies have kicked off their seasons, giving you plenty of options if you want to catch a show. PURE Theatre presents The Year of Magical Thinking, the Village Playhouse is showing The Little Dog Laughed, the Flowertown Players present Doubt, the Footlight Players present Rumors, and CofCโs Theatre Department presents Loveโs Fire and The Comedy of Errors.
Sports fans, the RiverDogs season is wrapping up in the next few weeks. Check out their games Friday through Sunday. The Battery are playing the Portland Timbers Friday night, and the Lowcountry Highrollers, Charlestonโs all-women flat-track roller derby team, has a bout on Saturday at the McAlister Field House on the Citadel campus.
Last but not least, check out Michael Jackson Memorial Roller Disco on Sunday night at Hot Wheels. Wear your โbaddestโ threads, as there will be a costume contest.
We know it’s a lot, and there’s even more. Check out our full weekend events calendar here.
