These days, when The Have Nots! hit the stage, people line up for tickets and cram into Theatre 99. But founding member Greg Tavares still remembers the days when they performed in local bars and were “literally swinging from the rafters to keep people’s attention.”

The troupe celebrates its 15th anniversary this year and will perform a handful of shows as part of Piccolo Fringe. In the last 10 years, the group has been instrumental in the formation of Piccolo Fringe in 2001, the Charleston Comedy Festival in 2005, and the continued growth of their home base, Theatre 99.

No wonder Tavares admits their Fringe performances this year will be a nostalgic experience. The Have Nots! plan to perform a tribute to themselves by revisiting many of their short-form improv games from past shows. “One of the ideas we’re kicking around is literally writing down the name of every single game we’ve ever played … and then during the first act having the ‘blast from the past’ position in the show to spotlight the fact that we’ve been together for so long and have done so many different things,” Tavares says.

Can you say, “Have Nots! hot tub time machine?”
